Maplewood Obituaries - August 28th

Anne M. LaScala

Mrs. Anne M. LaScala, 85, of Lower Nazareth Township, formerly of Maplewood, died Aug. 16, at Praxis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Easton, Pa.

Born in Maplewood, Mrs. LaScala was a self-employed beautician and former crossing guard in Maplewood.  She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bath, Pa.,  the St. Judes Guild, St. Josephs Holy Rosary Society in Maplewood and a former Cub and Girl Scout Leader.

Mrs. LaScala was predeceased by her husband, Peter F.  LaScala. She is survived by five  daughters, Linda Turner, Lisa Briskie LaScala, Carol Howard, Lois Gould and Cathy Fabrizio; a son, Peter F. LaScala, Jr.; a sister, Marie Bonnetti, and 10 grandchildren.


Thomas D. Mantore

Thomas D. Mantore, 92, of Edison, formerly of Orange  and West Orange, died Aug. 19, in the Veterans Home at Menlo Park, Edison.

Mr. Mantore was born in Newark, lived in Orange for 60 years and West Orange for 30 years before settling in Edison a few years ago. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Mantore was employed at Orange Roller Bearing Co. for 15 years, and then as a groundsman for the South Orange/Maplewood Board of Education for 10 years before retiring in 1990.

Mr. Mantore was predeceased by his wife, Lena Mantore. He is survived by a son, Thomas A. Mantore; two daughters, Maryann Abene and Linda Biasi; three brothers, John, James, and Ernest  Mantore Jr.; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Helen McManus Cahill

Mrs. Helen G. McManus Cahill, 90, of Maplewood, died Aug. 19.

Born in Hoboken, Mrs. Cahill lived in North Bergen and Cliffside Park before moving to Maplewood 11 years ago. She worked as a business office supervisor at the New York Telephone Co. for many years and later moved into a position as the FCC liaison for the presidents office.

Mrs. Cahill was a 1964 graduate of Fordham University with a bachelor’s degree in business. She was a member of St. Josephs Rosary Society, the church choir, the Rainbow Seniors, the Maplewood Seniors, the Catholic Daughters of America,  a Lady of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre for the Newark Archdiocese and a long-standing member and a Eucharistic minister at St. John the Baptist Church in Fairview.

Mrs. Cahill was predeceased by her husband, Thomas D. Cahill Jr. She is survived by two sons, Lawrence Doyle and Thomas D. Cahill III; a daughter, Eleanor Cahill; two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Boshanis A. Hagan

Boshanis A. Hagan died Aug. 18. Born in Newark, Mr. Hagan lived in Maplewood for 11 years. He was employed as a salesman at Macy’s.

Mr. Hagan is survived by his  mother, Gail Murray; his father, Jerome Hagan; one brother, Brent Murray Jr., and his grandmother, Ruby Yarbough.

Peter James Toal Sr.

Peter James Toal Sr., 76, of Ocean Gate, formerly of Maplewood, died Aug. 20.

Born in West Orange,  Mr. Toal was a graduate of West Orange High School where he played on the varsity basketball team, and attended Seton Hall University, earning a degree in marketing. He was an account manager for the Oscar Mayer Company for 32 years before his retirement.

Mr. Toal was a member of St. Barnabas Parish in Bayville, the Knights of Columbus, the Senior Mens Club of Pine Beach and a member of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh.

Mr. Toal is survived by his wife, Jadwiga W. Toal; five sons, Peter, Timothy, Stephen, Michael and Richard Toal; one daughter, Therese Toal-Lee, and 12 grandchildren.

Dr. Eugene J. Farley

Dr. Eugene J. Farley, 91, of the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, Md., formerly of Maplewood, died Aug. 14.

Dr. Farley received a doctorate in education from Rutgers University and both master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Montclair State University. He was a decorated United States Army veteran of World War II.

An expert on adult education, Dr. Farley pioneered the development of televised high school programs in the New York metropolitan area and authored several adult education texts that are still in use. He retired in 1978 from the South Orange-Maplewood schools.

Dr. Farley was predeceased by his wife, Alice Reichl Farley. He is survived by three sisters, Cecilia Farley, Patricia Morris and Jane Kelley, and two sons, David and Dennis Farley.

Helen T. Warzocha

Mrs. Helen T. Warzocha, 87, of Maplewood died Aug. 22 in St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.

Mrs. Warzocha was a receptionist at St. Marys Hospital in Orange. She loved animals and antiquing.

Mrs. Warzocha is survived by her husband,  Frank J. Warzocha; two sons, Donald J. Dubas and Frank J. Warzocha Jr.; a daughter,  Christine Jarosinki; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

L. Haluszka-Carragher

Mrs. Leda Haluszka-Carragher, nee Piche, 79, of Toms River died Aug. 22, at Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood.

Born in Albany, N.Y., Mrs. Haluszka-Carragher settled in Wayne, Newark, East Orange and Kenilworth before moving to Toms River. She was a bookkeeper and tax consultant for Ferrugia & Sons in Maplewood for 35 years, retiring 17 years ago.

Mrs. Haluszka-Carragher was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Josephs Church in East Orange, the Senior Citizens Club in Kenilworth and the Mahjong Club.

Mrs. Haluszka-Carragher was predeceased by her husbands, Stefan Haluszka and Edward Carragher. She is survived by a daughter, Laraine George;  two sons, Steven and Ronald Haluszka; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
